HSIE Outcome:

Prior Knowledge: Prior to beginning this webquest, this class had a few lessons on rainforests and deforestation in Australia.
Differentiation: All of the tasks offer a challenge/extension activity for those students with higher abilities.

Knowledge : Task One- Mindmap on Wordle , what do they already know about deforestation?
Then watch a documentary clip on Youtube
Comprehesnion: Task Two- Provide students with relevant websites. The students will need to read through the information and create a fact sheet (template has been provided) on the palm oil industry. In this fact sheet use the new knowledge to look at the effects on the animals, more specifically, orangutans.
Application: Task Three- research what products in your home contain palm oil , these may include food items or personal care products. List these in the word document provided, then suggest alternatives for each product, which do not contain palm oil.
Synthesis: Task Four- Choose a company that sells products containing palm oil and write a letter persuading them to encourage the sustainable use of palm oil or to use an alternative ingredient.
Evaluation: Task Five- Prepare a 2-3 mintue speech on deforestation in Indonesia , accompanied by a poster or powerpoint. The speeches are to be presented to the rest of Year 6.
