Task Four: Write a Letter
It is now time to take action!
Your task: Choose a company from task 3 which uses palm oil and write a formal letter requesting that they promote the sustainable use of palm oil in their products or use alternative oils which aren't harmful to the environment. Read the sample letter below before writing your letter to get some letter writing tips.
Remember to save your letter to the student drive!
Use the letter writing tips below to get started.
Before you write the letter, you need answer these questions.
Why? Why am I writing? What am I trying to accomplish?
What? What do I want? What are my goals?
Get three blank sheets of paper.
On the first sheet write "WHY? Why am I writing this letter?"
On the second sheet write "WHAT? What are my goals in writing this letter?"
On the third sheet write "Other Thoughts."
Brainstorm. Write down your thoughts. Make lists.
Don’t worry about writing in sentence or prioritizing. Your goal is to dump your thoughts from your brain onto these sheets of paper. Write down any additional ideas and thoughts on the third sheet of paper. You will write down your important thoughts in less than ten minutes.
While working remember to:
- State who the writer is
- Explain the reason for writing
- Deliver the necessary message or enquiry
- State clear what the sender would like the recipient to do
- Formal tone and formal language
- Write sender’s name and address top right
- Write recipient’s details on left below senders address
- Leave a line between paragraphs
- Use and appropriate sign-off line Sir/Madam à faithfully Name à Sincerely

Challenge: Go back to the first activities challenge where you wrote down what you wanted to know about deforestation and the palm oil industry. Answer all the questions you asked yourself. This will help with any information you want to include in the letter and the activity number 5!
